ANGEL WINGS

ANGEL WINGS

By Deborah Nyman

This image isfrom the Protestant Memorial Church Gedächtniskirche in Speyer, Germany, is a stunning example of neo-Romanesque architecture and a symbol of religious freedom. Built in the late 19th century to commemorate the protest of the evangelical states against the Catholic majority at the Diet of Speyer in 1529, the church features a soaring tower, a richly decorated interior, and a magnificent organ. The organ, installed in 1979, is the second largest mechanical organ in the world, with 95 registers and over 6,000 pipes. It produces a powerful and harmonious sound that fills the spacious nave and the vaulted ceiling. The church is a popular venue for concerts and cultural events, as well as a place of worship and reflection.
